Fair Work Act 2009 updateAuthor: Tony Cardillo, Emilia Cardillo Publish Date: October 15, 2009 Fair Work Act 2009 Update As most people will now be aware the Fair Work Act 2009 came into effect on 1 July 2009. It is important to note that while most of the provisions of the Act came into effect on 1 July 2009, some fairly significant changes are due to commence on 1 January 2010. These changes (due to commence on 1 January 2010) will have an impact on current contracts of employment and the operation of awards in the workplace. Employees previously not covered by any award may now have award coverage. Employers will need to review current employment contracts to ensure compliance with the provisions of the Fair Work Act due to commence on 1 January 2010. The legislative changes will also see new causes of action open to employees for unfair treatment in the workplace. Harris Wheeler will be conducting a second Fair Work Act seminar on Wednesday 11 November to provide clients with an overview of these topics and what employers need to know to ensure their workplace is Fair Work compliant by 1 January 2010. Employers should be aware of the changes and how they may affect their business.
